World mental health day webinar

The Department of Economics and Psychology at St. Xavier's College, Jaipur held an interactive session and webinar on 9th October to celebrate World Mental Health Day at 1:30 PM. The webinar was attended by 200+ students and faculty members of the college. The Programme Coordinators for the event were Ms. Poorvi Medatwal and Ms. Shiromi Chaturvedi. The webinar was conducted by the eminent clinical psychologist, Ms. Pradnya Deshpande, a mental health professional who has been working to promote psychological wellbeing for over 20 years. She is currently also a member of the committee on Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Work Place (POSH) at the Government run Psychiatric Centre affiliated to SMS Medical College.

With the objective of promoting mental health and wellbeing in students as part of the Mental Health Awareness Month, the Department organised this interactive session. The session invited students to submit the emotional problems faced by them anonymously and gave them a forum to discuss these problems with a mental health professional and encourage different perspectives of understanding the problem and brainstorm possible solutions. More than 100 students submitted the issues faced by them anonymously and some of the common problems discussed in the session included lack of anger management, issues with generation gap between the youth and the parents, relationship and family concerns as well as issues of insecurity, body image and lack of body positivity as well as negative emotions being experienced due to the ongoing pandemic.

Through this interaction, the students found a platform to listen to solutions of seemingly insurmountable problems and empathise with problems being faced by their peers. Ms. Deshpande engaged the students thoroughly with her insightful tips of how to maintain positivity not just in these difficult times but throughout our lives, when we're faced with problems. She explained the identification of negative and unhelpful thought patterns, coping strategies for restructuring these patterns as well as enhancing the quality of life and mental health by engaging in meaningful hobbies and pleasurable interests.

Ms. Deshpande, with her experience as a trainer for professionals also highlighted some tips for working professionals as part of this interactive webinar, which is a monthly webinar series as part of a Mental Health Drive started by the Department of Economics and Psychology, St. Xavier's College, Jaipur.
