Movie screening- 'A Beautiful Mind'

The department of economics and psychology at St. Xavier’s college, Jaipur organized a screening of the movie ‘A Beautiful Mind’ (2001) on 19th December 2020 through the online platform Google Meet. The session took off with a brief introduction and shortly after that the screening began. The movie was around 2 hours long. It was attended by over 50 students along with faculty members.

The film stars Russell Crowe as Nash, and Jennifer Connelly as his wife, Alicia. This film tells the story of Nash whose mind was of immense service to mankind while betraying him with horrific delusions at the same time. The director, Ron Howard does an amazing job of engaging his audience by introducing a brilliant main character and making the audience experience the reality of mental illness. The film is beautifully written, intelligently crafted, and stupendously acted. But as taut and beguiling as A Beautiful Mind may be as a political thriller/psychological drama, the film’s themes of marital devotion and one man’s obsessive quest for personal significance left the greatest impression.

The movie screening was followed by a movie review competition which was to be submitted by 23rd December, 2020. Out of the entries received, Nihar Vyas was adjudged the winner of the movie review competition.

Overall the movie screening and movie review engaged the students and was a significant break from their daily routine. This activity helped them to gain a better understanding on how mental disorders have a tremendous impact on the life of the individual suffering and the toll it takes on family and friends. It was a fun-filled day with a great learning experience for them.
