When it comes to technology and social media there is no denying the fact that in recent years it has slowly become a huge part of us, especially during the pandemic times. Its impact have been vastly acknowledged and forgotten by the people, the online movie screening on 28th November 2020 of “The Social Dilemma” by the Department of Economics and Psychology at St. Xavier’s College, Jaipur was an attempt to make students have a glimpse of what goes on the inside in making of these social media tools.
The session took off with a brief introduction and shortly after that the screening began. The film runs 1 hour and 34 minutes. It was attended by over 60 students along with the faculty. It helped the students explore how the Internet’s most popular products work on a basic business model of tracking users’ behavior in order to sell ads and induce addiction in a vicious cycle. The film blends interviews with tech experts and their sheer honesty helped make an impact on the viewers. Among the many issues the film touches on include how tech companies have influenced elections, ethnic violence and rates of depression and suicide.
It was an eye-opening, educational, foreboding yet insightful session and it explained the polarization, the addiction, the loneliness we are seeing in society. It’s about the dystopia technology is creating and at the same time how it facilitates and enriches our lives.
The screening was followed by an Essay writing competition, the given topic was WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT: CONNECTIVITY OR FREEDOM? The deadline for which was 28th November 2020, 7 p.m. Three winners were declared for this competition namely Kanvika Sharma, Pallavi Chattopadhyay and Pavitra Arora.
Overall the screening was very informative and a fun activity for the students to engage with. It helped them view a bigger picture and mark their boundaries with social media.
