SELF-AWARENESS: Need of the hour

Who are you? What are you good at? What are you bad at? What gets you going? Are you getting your answers? If not, then this is for you.

What is self awareness and why is it important?

Self awareness is a psychological state of being aware of different aspects of the self including traits, behaviors and feelings. Further, it is the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection. Although everyone has a fundamental idea of what self-awareness is, we don’t know exactly where it comes from, what its precursors are, or why some of us seem to have more or less than others.

In this  unprecedented  time,  self-awareness becomes more important because when we have a better understanding of ourselves we are able to experience ourselves as unique and separate  individuals. This way we can work to get empowered and identify the areas of strength.

Keeping the current scenario, where people are unable to sustain their mental balance and the importance of self awareness in mind, the department of Economics and Psychology at St. Xavier’s College, Jaipur organized a live webinar on Self Awareness - knowing yourself on November 6, 2020. The platform for the same was Google meet.

The coordinators for the event were Poorvi Medatwal and Shiromi Chaturvedi. The resource person for this webinar was Dr. Sudesh N.J, Asst. Professor of Psychology, CHRIST Bangalore, Supportive Supervisor, GFATM7, MG, Uni., KL, President, IALSE, Bangalore. The webinar commenced with a welcome note and introduction of the resource person. Mr. Sudesh addressed the audience and gave us a detailed insight on the importance of self talk of one's natural rhythm and preferences. He also threw the light on the technique to indulge in self consciousness. He conducted an ice breaker activity followed by a questionnaire which led us to know more about ourselves. He also explained how to identify one's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges for better reflection of oneself. The session was very informative and the key topic was explained with ease. Dr. Sudesh further stated that gaining consciousness about our inner selves will improve our quality of life. He also shared a quote by Ronald Reagan: "Our problems are many but our capacity to solve them are limitless.” which empowered and motivated us.

Students were given the opportunity to ask their queries towards the end of the event and everyone actively participated and got benefited. This webinar was a huge success for the department and the college as well.
